What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure used to detect abnormalities in the lower digestive system and colon, including colon cancer.

Medical Conditions Diagnosed With a Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is used to detect colorectal cancer, the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. A gastroenterologist may also recommend a colonoscopy to help diagnose Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or the cause of chronic constipation, abdominal pain, or rectal bleeding.

When To Have Your First Colonoscopy

You should have your first colonoscopy by the time you reach the age of 45. After the first colonoscopy, your gastroenterologist may recommend colonoscopies every few years, depending on your colorectal cancer risk.

Preparing For Your Colonoscopy

In the days before your colonoscopy, you will be placed on a liquid diet and given laxatives to clean out your colon. You should also avoid taking blood-thinning medications, including aspirin, in the days before your procedure.

What To Expect During Your Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is performed under sedation, so you will need to bring a driver with you to take you home afterward. The procedure itself takes about 45 minutes; however, plan on spending 2 to 3 hours in the facility as you recover from sedation.

During a colonoscopy, a thin, flexible tube is inserted into your rectum and guided up into your colon. The tube has a camera attached to one end, which allows the gastroenterologist to examine your colon. If the gastroenterologist locates any abnormal tissue or polyps, they can be removed and sent for a biopsy to detect if any abnormal cells are present. The results of your colonoscopy may be made available to you after the procedure or in a few days if a biopsy is needed.
